Here at the Post Growth Institute, we collaboratively develop ideas, programs, events, and alliances that promote the equitable circulation of money, power, and natural resources in our local communities and global economy. Each month we publish an overview of our key activities and impact through the various pillars of our work.

Post-growth Stories

Post Growth Affiliate, Taylor Steelman, reflects on ecological economics after the largest U.S. dam removal project and what allyship could look like. The tribes of the Klamath Basin show us not only how to heal a river — they demonstrate that decolonization is the form of degrowth that justice requires. As Indigenous studies scholars Eve Tuck and K. Wayne Yang argue, “Decolonization is not a metaphor.” That is, the liberal democratic state needs degrowing.

Post-growth Events

The PGI is celebrating and excited to be partnering with totel.ly and Mai bine as recipients of an EU Erasmus+ grant to bring the “Connection Regenerator” and Offers & Needs Market training to life in Iceland and Romania! Tanja Wohlrab-Ryan from totel.ly completed her OANM Facilitator certification in 2022 and has been leading a series of monthly OANM events in Reykjavik. Now Tanja is bringing a cohort of changemakers from Iceland and Romania to the April 2024 OANM facilitator training through the grant.

Registration is open for OANM facilitation training — join the virtual global cohort to boost your facilitation skills and learn a tangible community development model to build economies beyond capitalism.

Last month, the PGI debuted its theory of change. Our Director of Strategy, Donnie Maclurcan, gave a keynote presentation titled: “An Integrated, Post-Growth Approach to Organizational Success” at the Consulting Without Borders conference hosted by the Gabriel Al-Salem Foundation. Watch the recording to learn how to catalyze embodied wisdom and virtuous cycles within your organization, plus practical consulting practices.

Meanwhile, our Director of Communications, Priscilla Trinh, conducted an experiment with a classroom of students at the University of Minnesota’s College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences. Her presentation focused on effective communication and highlighted ways she modeled post-growth leadership. The highlight: many in the room strongly resonated with the organizational culture practiced at the PGI and intuitively came to the same conclusions on what a post-growth led world should feel like.
